PF-109 was one of a twelve fast patrol boats designed for planet defense. It was akin to the U.S. Navy's patrol torpedo boats of the twentieth century and the "109" is a direct reference to "PT-109" commanded by John F. Kennedy during World War II.

PF-109 and other PFs successfully attack a target drone using unconventional tactics in Defiant. They go on to defeat an invasion fleet from the Greenfield Empire, suffering tremendous losses.
